Broadway Sings for Synchronicity's Playmaking for Girls
On July 12th, 2010, Kevin Ireland and Broadway veteran
D.C. Anderson presented a benefit cabaret for the
Playmaking for Girls
community outreach program of Atlanta’s
Synchronicity Theatre,
featuring singing performances by cast members from the
Phantom of the Opera Broadway National Tour.
Phantom cast members donated one of their two “quiet nights” (in three Atlanta weeks)
to our cause.
Ticket revenues will be used by Synchronicity Theatre to support their Playmaking for Girls programs.
For this one-night-only event, members of the cast performed musical theatre and cabaret standards
along with a number of new and rarely heard songs at the
Balzer Theatre at Herren's in downtown Atlanta.
The 200-seat theatre allowed us to provide all patrons with an up-close, memorable
musical experience.
Our singers were Dara Adler, D.C. Anderson,
Ella Cope, William Patrick Dunne, Kelly Jeanne Grant,
Luke Grooms, Michael Scott Harris, Satomi Hofmann, Anne Kanengeiser,
Elaine Matthews, Justin Lee Miller, David Robison,
Pamela Shandrow, Kim Stengel and Elizabeth Welch. Dancers included Don Bellamy, Triana Cristobal and
Anna Laghezza.
Our musical director and pianist for the evening was David Robison, who conducted the National Tour of
Evita and is the associate conductor for the National Tour of Phantom. Silvio Scambone played
the clarinet and flute while Juliette Javaheri was on violin.
Press Coverage
The event received tremendous press coverage in Atlanta, both online and in the print edition of the

About Playmaking for Girls
Playmaking for Girls
is dedicated to engaging young women in the creation of
theatre as a tool for creative expression,
community healing and personal growth.
It includes four primary components:
- After-school program – before girls get into trouble
- Detention center program – while girls are in trouble
- Summer program – when girls are ‘out’ and on probation
- Mentor program – ongoing support
Three years ago, Atlanta's WABE radio broadcast an interview about the "Playmaking for Girls" program.
It's included in the first video above,
along with a photo slideshow.
About the Broadway Sings cast from Phantom:
As you might expect, this is an incredibly talented group.
They’ve performed on Broadway, in multiple national tours and in top regional theaters across the country.
They’ve sung with everyone from Faith Hill to David Cassidy and have released multiple recordings.
They’ve appeared with opera companies around the world, including the Met, and at the Barcelona Summer Olympics.
The cast included top ballet dancers as well as performers from the Spoleto, Aspen and Eastern Music festivals.
Cast members also have worked with Stephen Spielberg in an upcoming animated film.
About Broadway Sings for Atlanta:
This is the second in an ongoing series of benefits for Atlanta nonprofit agencies by Broadway touring companies.
On May 10, the National Tour cast of Mary Poppins gave a sold-out cabaret show benefiting
Jerusalem House’s efforts to support low-income families and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.
The cast called it “the best benefit we’ve ever held.”
Among other criteria, nonprofits like Jerusalem House and Synchronicity manage ticket sales themselves,
ensuring that they maintain total control over benefit proceeds.
These benefits deliver intimate world-class musical experiences rarely available in Atlanta.
About the producers:
- Kevin Ireland is the creator of theBestArts.com,
which features thousands of great performances by rising Broadway performers and songwriters.
- D.C. Anderson has appeared on Broadway in
Phantom and in the national tours of Phantom, Martin Guerre,
Pippin and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.
D.C. has 10 solo recordings and has produced benefit recordings for
Broadway Cares (1993) and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (2010).
