LIFT

Lift is a musical by British songwriters Craig Adams and Ian Watson. The show is about the stories that exist when people are brought together. It’s about the connections we’re never aware of but that link us as clearly as the lift we share or the personal space we protect so carefully but begrudgingly lend to people we’ll never know.

Eight characters, joined for this brief get-together by a busker (street performer), share a London tube lift to the surface. The journey lasts less than a minute but the stories that fill that confined space and link them all spill into our view while time steps aside and shows us fate’s cutting room floor - the ‘also rans’ in the events of a life, a day or less than a minute in a lift.

This is a view of the normally invisible potential for love, fear, lust and life that make up the hidden genetics packed into every casual moment spent so freely just getting us through a day. If they could see what we can see they’d grab their chance, because this is it! Here, in this lift, is all the possibility they’ll ever need! They just have to do something before- “this station is ‘Exit Only’, please have your tickets ready.”

These videos are from a reading in 2008 held by Perfect Pitch Musicals at the Trafalgar Studios in London. Cast members were Sophia Behn (Secretary), Craig Els (BYT), Nick Hayes (Angel), Jamie Muscato (Busker), Rachel Parrott (Sarah), Sophia Ragavelas (Amy), Adam Slynn (TDH) and Jennifer Tierney (French teacher). The reading was directed by Pip Minnithorpe; musical director was Torquil Munro.
