How did this event come about?

In January, I told CMU student Nick Cosgrove that I wished more musical theatre programs hosted showcase concerts for their graduating seniors. He explained that CMU holds two senior showcases, but not on campus. Instead, the seniors perform in NYC and in LA for prospective agents, producers and the like. I asked if seniors might be interested in staying through the week and performing at the After Party; Nick liked the idea.

I proposed the CMU night to Brandon Cutrell and he immediately agreed. Nick enlisted Hunter Ryan Herdlicka as a headliner, while I recruited Matthew Scott and (through Matthew) Kirsten Bracken Scott. Alum Will Reynolds brought in Sara Jean Ford while Brandon filled the list out with Tommar Wilson and Mitch Jarvis.

Based on these videos and the feedback I've received, it looks like the night was a major success.

CMU Student/Alumni Showcase Compilation - 2010

About This Video

In spring of 2010, I invited students and alumni from Carnegie Mellon's musical theatre program to perform in a showcase concert in NYC. This was the first show I ever helped produce, and I'm still overwhelmed by the CMU and audience response.

I'm co-producing additional senior/alum concerts in 2011.  There is no charge for performers or attendees.  My goals with the shows are to help seniors connect with top alums, give seniors the chance to perform in a leading NYC club, provide them with a great video for their portfolios, and to give them a lasting memory as their time together moves to a close. The 2010 CMU show wouldn't have been possible without the support of Brandon Cutrell, host of The After Party at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. CMU senior Nick Cosgrove was instrumental in coordinating student performances.  Brandon and Nick helped land alumni headliners for the show.

Matthew Scott joined us during SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM tech week, just five days before the show opened on Broadway.  After putting in a 16 hour day, Matt went right to the Laurie Beechman to support the CMU seniors, then got a few hours of sleep before he went back for more tech rehearsal.  Hunter Ryan Herdlicka (A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC), Sara Jean Ford (FINIAN'S RAINBOW), CMU songwriter alum Will Reynolds (THE GREENWOOD TREE), Kirsten Scott (HAIRSPRAY), Tommar Wilson (HAIR) and Zak Resnick (BROADWAY BOYS) also performed - thank you so much!

Student performers included Nick Cosgrove, Skye Scott, Tess Soltau, Amanda Cooper, Sophia Feldman, Daisy Hobbs and Trevor McQueen Eaton.
